Two Millennia of Slander
Meet Pope Gregory I.
Gregory spent his whole life as a monk, so maybe we should forgive him for being easily confused by females.
He picked up the New Testament and saw – whoa! so many females! There was a Mary of Bethany, a Mary Magdalene, a sinful woman who washed Jesus’ feet, and a woman who anointed Jesus from head to toe. How to keep them all straight?!
The only solution, obviously, was to create one character out of all of them and call her Mary Magdalene. So that’s what Gregory did in 591 AD. Heck, why not also make her a prostitute? That makes for a good story, doesn’t it?
Voila! A whore is born.
Let’s be absolutely clear here:
Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. She was NOT.
